Marcus Book Stores
San Francisco, CA
SF Shines Program

Marcus Book Stores holds and
important place in San Francisco’s
history as the only original black
owned business remaining in the
Fillmore District.  While the store has
been in this three story Victorian for
decades its visibility as a storefront
was minimal due to lack of substantial
signage, building setback and other
common storefront elements.

The improvements increase the book
store’s visibility in a way that is
respectful to the Victorian architecture
while drawing attention from
pedestrians. A new awning with sloped
shape defers to the bay window above
while new trim color and signage
differentiate the business from the
rest of the building.   The setback from
the sidewalk created the opportunity
to introduce a small forecourt and
welcoming gathering space with
benches, planters and a decorative
sign post at the back of sidewalk.
